Making everyone a little uneasy came naturally. I used to like being told I was “intimidating,” because it seemed to sanction my verbal jabbing to maintain a perimeter. Though I have an outsize grin, and friends take pleasure in trying to elicit it, I am reserved upon first meeting (it’s Wasp women who are expected to charm). I have a soft laugh, and I rarely raise my voice. I politely stand aside: no, no, after you. And, like the Tin Man, I don’t articulate my upper body sections it moves en masse or not at all. I will never experience the pleasures of chest hair. I will never experience the pleasures of leather pants or a shark’s tooth on a thong dangling in my chest hair. I have a concise and predictable wardrobe, and friends even claim that I inevitably wear the same oatmeal – colored Shetland sweater. And atop the Wasp fridge sit Pepperidge Farm Milanos, Fig Newtons, or Saltines – some chewy or salty or otherwise challenging snack). (The Wasp fridge is like the bachelor fridge, but Wasps load up on dairy, including both 1 and 2 percent milk, moldy cheese, expired yogurt, and separated sour cream. Until quite recently, I had the Wasp fridge: marmalade, wilted scalions, out-0f-season grapes, seltzer and vodka – nothing to really eat. ![]() Oh, sure, I don’t belong to any clannish or exclusive clubs, I prefer beer to hard liquor, I am neither affable nor peevish – the alternating currents of Wasp – and I love pop culture.Īnd yet. In this and more important respects I seem to have become, somehow, a motley product of my famously marvelous background. ![]() That cast of mind is excessively attuned to such questions as how you say “tomato” – a word I now find myself pronouncing both ways, usually at random and always with misgiving. Bean to the north, the shingle style to the east, Robert Falcon Scott’s doomed polar expedition to the south, and the limits of Horace Greely’s optimism to the west. They lived in a floating Ruritania losely bounded by L.L. But my family and their friends, as Wasps, were circumscribed less by skin tones and religion than by a set of traditions and expectations: a cast of mind. I’m too cheap to spring for a new acronym. Worse, the adjective is pejorative: “Waspy” is reserved for horse-faced women, tight-assed men, penny pinchers, and a capella groups. Elvis Presley was a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant, as is Bill Clinton, but they are not what anyone means by “Wasp.” Waspiness is an overlay on human character, like the porcelain veneer that protects the surface of a damaged tooth. ![]() The ACRONYM “Wasp,” from “White Anglo-Saxon Protestant,” is one many Wasps dislike, as it’s redundant – Anglo-Saxons are perforce white – and inexact. Given the frequency with which the term Wasp is bandied about by fashion bloggers, and particularly in light of the recent dust up between Ivy Style and Wasp 101, I thought it might be useful to let someone with some expertise on the matter cast some light. In the first chapter of Cheerful Money, Friend begins to unpack the meaning of Wasp and discusses why that term is not really accurate in describing old money families and their mores. He is a staff writer for The New Yorker and a graduate of Harvard University. Tad Friend, in his 2009 memoir Cheerful Money: Me, My Family and the Last Days of Wasp Splendor, reveals in candid detail his complicated upbringing and emotionally insular life in an illustrious family, which includes a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a president of Swarthmore College and generations of Ivy League degrees.

![]() The new footprint helps the Trax drive like a more substantial car than its budget price suggests, with confident road holding and stability at highway speeds. The Trax has a longer wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels) than the old model, which can help ride quality, and a wider track (the distance between the right and left wheels) for improved handling. We’ll have to spend more time with the Trax to get an idea of its real-world fuel economy. The downside of the six-speed might be in fuel economy because while the new Trax’s 30-mpg combined gas mileage rating is improved versus the old one’s 27 mpg rating, it’s less than a Nissan Kicks (33 mpg), front-wheel-drive Toyota Corolla Cross (32 mpg) or Hyundai Venue (31 mpg). I prefer this experience to the sluggish responsiveness and screaming engine noise that comes with many affordable cars that use a continuously variable automatic transmission. How it gets there is slightly different than the class, however, because the drivability of the engine and transmission is more pleasant thanks to the traditional six-speed automatic that makes crisp upshifts and eager downshifts to get the car moving. Anything that surprises in this price range is notable when cars like the Hyundai Venue, Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross or Nissan Kicks don’t have much happening under the hood. But given the smaller power number on paper, I was surprised by how punchy it actually was around town. The new engine dishes out an initial punch before it runs out of steam around 45 mph, so while good for around town, there’s not much going on if you need to call upon the engine for highway maneuvers. The Trax’s only engine and transmission is a 137-horsepower, turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder and six-speed automatic, which strangely is less powerful than the outgoing Trax’s 155-hp engine. The Trax no longer offers all-wheel drive, so it has technically lost its SUV designation in our classifications, but call the line officially blurred because by all other SUV measures, including ride height, seating position and cargo versatility, the Trax is similar to other small utility vehicles. Related: 2024 Chevrolet Trax: Burgeoning Space, Tech Shrinking Price, HP How It Accelerates When the average new car transaction price is around $45,000, this is impressive, but does it drive like a cheap car? Our first opportunity to drive the Trax came at the Midwest Automotive Media Association’s 2023 Spring Rally in Elkhart Lake, Wisc., and I drove the uplevel Activ trim level that, amazingly, was still only around $26,000 - even with some options packages. It’s also less expensive than its predecessor last seen as a 2022 model. This is notable because the Trax has been completely redesigned for 2024, is significantly larger and has more technology. With a starting price just over $21,000 with destination charge, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax is one of the top 10 least expensive new cars out there. ![]() A bedtime feature was introduced in iOS 10, which acts as a special alarm in which the user sets both a time they would like to go to bed and a time they would like to wake up. The following discussion is based on the current version of XE, 4.0, which uses MCP 18.0 and was released in August 2018. I will uninstall McAfee soon, falling back to Microsoft's free Windows Defender. The trial period recently expired and I will not be extending the subscription. I wanted to see if a typical anti-malware application affected the installation or use of MCP Express. The laptop also came with a trial version of McAfee Security, which has been enabled. I have installed a minimum number of additional applications thus far, just Firefox, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and my favorite text editor. While I originally set up Windows 10 using my Microsoft account and would have expected no problem in continuing to use that, I have since configured Windows to use a local account. The laptop came with Windows 10 Home and the usual collection of "shovelware" you get with a home-class PC. I don't recommend this particular laptop one way or the other for use with XE - it's just one of the cheapest I found that is representative of a low-end Windows 10 system. The 8GB of memory is actually overkill - 4GB would have been more than adequate. This is plenty powerful enough to host XE. It has a 1.1GHz, quad-core, Pentium Silver CPU, 8GB memory, 500GB hard drive, and 14-inch HD LED display. ![]() It is a Hewlett-Packard Laptop 14 (model CK0061ST). I have been installing and using XE on a Windows 7 Pro laptop since the first release in 2015 without undue difficulty - at least when I followed the directions carefully enough. Much of the difficulty that people have had getting XE up and running appears to involve Windows 10. Those are topics we will take up in future posts. Also, let's not overlook Ventimiglia’s high-top Converse with no socks, indeed a tremendous warm-weather style move. But if you think about it, that same concept feels pretty applicable to most summer activities. Perhaps even split shorts? (They're a go-to for serious runners everywhere, and great to work out in.) Ventimiglia, who obviously doesn't skip leg day by the looks of those thighs, was wearing what I can only guess are shorts with between a one- and three-inch inseam.
